My IMI Story - SunYoung Lee

If you ask SunYoung Lee how others would describe her, she uses words like stubborn and realistic. But, as we find out more about her life, from her childhood in Seoul to moving to study in Ireland, there’s far more of a mix between focused planning and intense curiosity, with a big dash of adventure.
Take, for example, her choice of study. SunYoung chose a Bachelor’s degree in Woodwork and Furniture Design in Korea, which she says taught her about process management, from ideation to execution, and managing tight deadlines and budgets.
Next, a Master’s in Psychoanalytic Studies in Ireland, which opened her eyes to new perspectives on people and a deeper insight into the complexities of the human mind.
“I chose both fields out of curiosity at different stages of life. Living in Dublin, Ireland, had a profound impact on how I see the world. Moving to a city at 26, where I had no connections, felt like being reborn. That four-year experience gave me perspectives I never would’ve otherwise gained.”
Starting her journey toward IMI
While her adventurous spirit took her around the world to study, SunYoung has remained focused on achieving her goals, which have guided her career choices.
Before IMI, she joined the Research and Development team in a construction equipment manufacturing company. Her work involved product planning and engineering support. Then, in 2017, SunYoung joined IMI as a Marketing Specialist for the Korea business unit. That expanded to support the APAC region, and now SunYoung is Senior Strategic Planning Manager for the APAC region for Process Automation.
“In my current role, I’m able to take a holistic view of the business and ensure alignment between our strategic objectives and regional execution. What I value most is the opportunity to collaborate across functions, contribute to shaping our regional strategy, and help bring it to life.”
Finding pleasure in the simple moments
When someone has an adventurous and curious spirit, how do you balance that with the focus needed for strategic planning?
The key, she says, is concentration. Taking time to appreciate the simple pleasures in life, and focusing fully on what she is doing at any given time.
“For me, concentration is key. I try to give my full attention to whatever I’m doing — whether it’s work or personal time. Being present in the moment helps me go deeper, improve the quality of what I do, and ultimately save time. That’s why I aim to stay focused during official work hours, so I can wrap up on time and fully shift my attention to personal interests.”
Her home life is very much about enjoying the moment. SunYoung takes great delight in her life in Seoul, where she lives with her family — her American husband, David, and two affectionate sister cats, Blueberry and Coconut.

“I’ve lived in Seoul since I was five, and it’s still my favourite city in the world. The convenience, infrastructure, dynamic, food, technology, history, culture, and even the mountains right in the city make it a place that never stops surprising me.
One simple pleasure I try to make time for is visiting Changgyeong Palace with my husband. We enjoy walking in nature and searching for the cats that live there. It’s peaceful and grounding.”
Another pleasure is the enjoyment she finds in her work.
“The most rewarding part of my job is learning. I’m incredibly grateful to be surrounded by such inspiring leaders, particularly in the Korea office, who always make time to listen and offer thoughtful advice and insight. Even a casual conversation with them can bring clarity, direction, and new ideas.
Looking back, I’ve come to believe that every bit of learning helps you grow and connect the dots in both expected and unexpected ways.
There’s a dynamic culture at IMI that drives us to solve problems and make life easier, safer, and better every day. I’m proud to be part of that effort. That’s also what I love about working at IMI — there’s always something new to learn.”

A final thought with a big impact
While we expected curiosity to be the value that resonated with SunYoung, it is Creating Impact she feels the most.
“While Always Care and Be Curious reflect our mindset and culture, it’s the impact we create — for ourselves and our customers — that drives sustainability and progress. That’s what keeps us moving forward.”
Sharing a final thought, SunYoung leaves us with a Chinese proverb.
진인사대천명 (盡人事待天命)
“My dad used to share this with me whenever I faced a big challenge. In English, it roughly translates to: “Do your best and leave the rest to Heaven.”
Even though I’m agnostic, this saying helps me manage anxiety and stay focused on what I can control. It reminds me that all I can do is give my best — then accept the outcome and move forward.”
