Our series #ChooseTheRightValve, explores the Process Automation valve portfolio from the ground up, from baseline to speciality. In this article, we start with Tier 1 butterfly and ball valves that enable the reliable operation of industrial plants worldwide.

Butterfly and ball valves: simplicity meets engineering integrity

Sometimes, the most important thing a valve needs to do is open, close, and seal reliably day after day. This is the domain of Tier 1 butterfly and ball valves, the most widely used valve technology across industrial, energy, water, and process applications all over the world.

However, it would be a mistake to assume that simple equates with generic. When a system's performance depends on tight shutoff, distinguishing between an adequate valve and the highest-quality valve is essential. Even at Tier 1, our products reflect a commitment to engineering integrity, performance and long-term reliability.

IMI’s Valve Tier framework groups technologies by engineering complexity, helping match valve capability to application requirements across everyday and extreme operating conditions.

The primary focus of Tier 1 valves

Tier 1 valves have few requirements, namely reliable isolation and dependable flow control. But they are expected to meet those requirements exceptionally well.

Butterfly and ball valves are the most commonly selected at the tier level because they balance performance, durability, and cost-effectiveness. They are easy to operate and adaptable across a wide range of industries and operating systems.

IMI's Process Automation ball valves

We engineer our ball valves to provide tight shut-off and smooth operation. With their robust construction, they are ideal for isolation duties in a range of environments from industrial to hygienic.

Their key features include:

  • Bubble-tight sealing for reliable isolation.

  • Full or true-bore designs to minimise pressure drop and maximise flow efficiency.

  • Wide material selection, including stainless steel and speciality alloys.

  • Direct-mount actuation compatibility for manual, pneumatic, or electric automation.

Certain Tier 1 designs also incorporate features such as our PBM-Adjust-O-Seal® technology. This innovative adjustable sealing technology allows in-line servicing to compensate for normal seat wear, extending operational life. As such, it represents the precise engineering that runs through every tier of our portfolio: that even the simplest solution should be designed for longevity.

IMI's Process Automation butterfly valves

Our Tier 1 butterfly valves provide a space-saving, lightweight solution for isolation and flow control, particularly in larger pipe sizes where efficiency and ease of operation are critical. Designed for severe applications, our high-performance valves feature metal-to-metal seating for enhanced durability and safety.

Key Features:

  • Compact quarter-turn operation for fast and easy actuation.

  • Double eccentric designs that reduce seat wear and extend valve life.

  • Bi-directional, zero-leakage shut-off for secure isolation.

  • Self-cleaning and uninterrupted seating designs.

  • Wide size range and material options for diverse applications.

The benefits of an IMI design

The defining quality of a butterfly or ball valve is its durability in shut-off. How it behaves after extended use and how well it resists wear is what separates average from exceptional design.

The IMI Orton MV Triple Eccentric butterfly valve, for example, uses a triple-offset disc design that eliminates friction between the disc and the seat ring, reducing wear compared to conventional designs. The result is a valve that maintains bubble-tight shut-off for a significantly longer service life.

Even here, our engineering offers enhanced performance. By modifying the trim design of our IMI Truflo C-Rex ball valve technology, we provide more precise flow control. This offers a bridge between the greater functionality and the compact, cost-effective design of Tier 1 and the greater flow control that Tier 2 provides.

All our valves are engineered for easy maintenance and consistent sealing performance. With extended servicing intervals and improved process reliability, customers benefit from reduced downtime and greater cost efficiency.

Tier 1 valves within IMI’s portfolio

The differentiation between Tier 1 and Tier 2 designs is the requirement for enhanced flow control. The IMI Orton MV provides excellent isolation and is the right choice when your priority is reliable, low-maintenance shut-off. But when flow modulation is needed, Tier 2 may be more appropriate.

Similarly, the IMI Truflo Italy range includes a wide variety of ball valve applications. Its compact design, simplicity, and longevity make it the right choice for a wide range of applications. But where enhanced flow control is needed, the limited rotary stroke of these designs cannot compare to the longer linear strokes of Tier 2 designs.

Choosing between Tier 1 and Tier 2 can often be solved with some straightforward questions.

  • Does the application require tight shut-off and reliable isolation as its top priorities?

  • What are the maintenance access limitations?

  • What are the consequences of a leaking valve?

  • What degree of flow control is required? And with what rangeability? 10:1, 20:1 or higher?

Our engineers will work with you to determine whether the product's size and specifications are the most suitable, or whether a Tier 2 valve would represent the most cost-effective long-term investment.
