When it comes to innovative technologies, the real measure of success is how well they perform in the long run. For IMI's Metamorphic Trim (MMT), the story didn't end at installation.

Across oil & gas and petrochemical facilities, customers continue to see the benefits of MMT years after the installation. What began as a solution to clogging, cavitation, and maintenance challenges has evolved into a proven technology delivering long-term reliability, reduced downtime, and significant cost savings.

Here's a look back at three customer applications and the lasting impact MMT continues to make in the field.

MMT success story #1

Eliminating downtime in North Sea gas production

A North Sea oil and gas operator was facing recurring valve clogging issues that resulted in production losses of up to 50% and an estimated annual impact of £2 million. After installing IMI's Metamorphic Trim (MMT) in August 2021, the results have been remarkable.

More than 4 years after commissioning, the valve has continued operating without any reported maintenance issues or unplanned downtime. The customer has already achieved savings of approximately £9 million while restoring reliability to the gas dehydration system. The success of the installation led to additional MMT orders for both the original site and a second facility.

Performance highlights:

  • Zero reported valve issues since installation

  • Elimination of unplanned downtime caused by clogging

  • £9 million in customer savings achieved

  • Additional MMT units ordered following successful deployment

MMT success story #2

Offshore platform achieves over £1 million in annual savings

On an offshore platform in Norway, three critical hydrocyclone letdown valves were repeatedly clogging due to sand-contaminated sticky fluids, requiring manual cleaning every two to three months and increasing operating costs.

Since the MMT upgrade was installed in 2021, the valves have operated continuously without issues. The self-cleaning trim has eliminated the need for frequent maintenance interventions while improving produced water quality and reducing overall operating expenditure. The customer now reports annual savings exceeding £1 million.

MMT helped eliminate recurring valve clogging and maintenance interventions in an offshore hydrocyclone letdown valve application.

Performance highlights:

  • Continuous operation since 2021

  • No reported clogging or maintenance issues

  • Improved produced water quality

  • More than £4 million in annual cost savings

  • Reduced offshore maintenance requirements

MMT success story #3

Solving a long-standing petrochemical challenge

A major petrochemical producer in South Korea struggled with chronic failures of slurry pump recirculation valves due to clogging and cavitation. The issue had persisted across multiple plants within the complex, requiring maintenance every 4 weeks.

Following the installation of MMT in January 2022, the valve has remained in continuous service while delivering stable process control and significantly improved reliability. Years later, inspections confirmed that the trim continues to perform as intended, helping the customer avoid recurring maintenance and operational disruptions.

The success has generated annual savings of £100,000 and sparked interest from other plants across the petrochemical complex.

Performance highlights:

  • Continuous service since January 2022

  • Elimination of chronic clogging and cavitation issues

  • £100,000 annual cost savings

  • Improved plant safety and reliability

  • Expanded opportunities across the wider complex

These three projects demonstrate what happens when breakthrough engineering meets real-world challenges. Across oil & gas and petrochemical applications, MMT has helped customers eliminate operational issues, improve reliability, reduce maintenance requirements, and unlock significant cost savings. Most importantly, these results aren't just confined to trials or short-term testing, they're being delivered consistently in the field. As more customers adopt MMT, we're continuing to prove how Growth Hub innovations can create measurable value where it matters most.
