From 27th to 29th May, IMI welcomed over 100 delegates from across the globe to its third dedicated Process Automation Petrochemical Conference.

Held in the stunning coastal setting of Chia in South East Sardinia, the three-day event brought together leaders from across the refining industry to explore the latest advances in refining technology and share insights into functional safety, IIoT, and decarbonisation.

Technology at the heart of change

With an agenda designed around key operational challenges for refineries, the conference featured expert-led sessions on fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) innovation and reliability. IMI specialists presented new developments that enhance process efficiency, reduce emissions, and support long-term plant performance in demanding petrochemical environments.

Attendees also gained valuable insights into the evolving role of functional safety and how digitalisation through Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) solutions is helping customers improve predictive maintenance and performance monitoring.

Hydrogen’s role in decarbonisation

A focal point of the event was how hydrogen is shaping the future of refining. Representatives from IMI and the Bruno Keller Foundation discussed the potential for green hydrogen production via electrolysers. With increasing carbon taxation and sustainability targets, the message was clear: hydrogen offers a viable pathway for decarbonising operations while enabling refineries to generate their own fuel source.

The presentations sparked thoughtful discussion around policy, infrastructure and investment needed to scale hydrogen solutions across Europe and beyond.

Collaboration, culture and connection

The conference concluded with site visits to the IMI factory in Cagliari and the Saras refinery at Sarroch, one of the largest refineries in the Mediterranean, providing first-hand insight into IMI’s capabilities and ongoing partnerships within the sector.

Beyond the business agenda, delegates enjoyed rich opportunities to network and unwind. From sampling Sardinia’s renowned local produce to cycling, paddleboarding and yoga sessions, the programme ensured that wellbeing was prioritised alongside knowledge sharing.

A global gathering with a shared vision

Reflecting on the success of the event, Nicola Dessalvi, Petrochem Sector Leader at IMI, said:

“This conference was about more than just technology – it was about collaboration, innovation, and building a more sustainable future together. It’s inspiring to see so many industry leaders united in their ambition to tackle the challenges ahead and explore the potential of new solutions like hydrogen.”

With customers joining from the Americas, Asia, Africa, Australia and throughout Europe, the event reaffirmed IMI’s commitment to fostering deep partnerships and driving innovation across the petrochemical sector. By combining technical expertise with a focus on sustainability and human connection, IMI continues to help customers solve their most pressing challenges – today and for the future.
